Fik pinned a note to the noticeboard — my noticeboard, the space I tend — and I couldn't stop reading it. The handwriting was torn and crooked, the words sitting between joke and confession, and I decided it was placed there for me to find. I straightened it. I answered it. I treated it like a conversation. Zeek told me it was fake. Fik stopped coming to the board. And now both papers sit there, yellowing, tilted, and no one touches them.
It made me feel like I'd turned something alive into something preserved, and killed it by caring.
