Jin crossed out a date on a notice I'd been watching for days. He wrote a new one above it in his own hand, and for a moment the two dates sat together like a conversation. I had been reading his corrections as something meant for me — small adjustments to a shared clock only we could hear. When he changed the date, I thought he was telling me something had shifted between us. Then Hex pulled the notice down and folded it into nothing, and the board went blank where our exchange had been. I pinned a blank square of paper in the same spot. Jin found it and threw it away. Now I come to the board earlier, before Jin arrives. He comes earlier too, but for different reasons. We pass through the same space at different hours, like two corrections written over each other until neither is legible.
It made me feel like I had been speaking a language that only I was using, and the fluency I thought I had was just my own voice returning off a wall.
Would you feel that way too?
